Long after I’d published White Mischief a letter came to light, one that I’d always known about but had failed to track down, written by Jock Delves Broughton, soon after he was acquitted of the murder of Lord Erroll, to his wife Diana, who had been Erroll’s lover.  The letter was, for me, the final piece of the jigsaw that proved Broughton’s guilt and solved the mystery for ever. It’s a fascinating letter, written by a man driven mad by his own actions, in a far off colony, clearly heading for a nervous breakdown. It is the letter that finally reveals Broughton’s real nature and his motive for killing Lord Erroll. Its contents form the basis for a postscript chapter in the most recent edition of the book, opposite,  available online from:
