Two book reviews on Lucan: Trail of Havoc by Patrick Marnham and Lucan: Not Guilty by Sally Moore. Moore’s book was a family sponsored attempt to exonerate the Earl. Marnham, a very good writer, had done a more interesting job, though his book was fatally flawed by his elaborate theory not matching the local geography, and rendering it impossible. He hadn’t walked the ground. Armchair detective work can easily get unstuck on details.
