Then, in 2010, came his part in the scandal surrounding Liliane Bettencourt, the richest woman in France and heiress to the L’Oreal fortune. Her daughter brought a court case to investigate the estimated $1 billion in cash her mother had given Banier. In court Banier cited this piece to show his distinction – he was only the third French writer to have been on the cover of the Sunday Times Magazine , apart from Simone de Beauvoir and Cocteau.
