Arguably the piece that made Banier’s name though he pretended to hate it. Then, in 2010, came his part in the scandal surrounding Liliane Bettencourt, the richest woman in France and heiress to the L’Oreal fortune. Her daughter brought a court case to investigate the estimated $1 billion in cash her mother had given Banier. In court Banier cited this piece to show his distinction – he was only the third French writer to have been on the cover of the Sunday Times Magazine , apart from Simone de Beauvoir and Cocteau.
