Heaven and hell: on the old French built Dakar to Niger railway, crossing the savannah in search of the clear voiced singers of Mali, travelling with two great kora players and griots from Gambia, they in search of their roots in the cradle of African music. A magical trip – despite a train journey of crowded, miserable claustrophobic hell for thirteen hours, in which a square inch for a buttock to rest on was something to pay dearly for.
