My friend, the late Marie Colvin, distinguished war correspondent, who was killed in Homs in 2012 (almost certainly assassinated by the Syrian regime), singlehandedly saved the lives of 1500 refugees in East Timor from certain death in 1999, by refusing to leave them in a besieged UN compound as the UN prepared to pull out. She had nothing but her Satellite Phone and her extraordinary courage to bargain with.
